Simply the best … way to play golf

Kent is well known for some of the finest golf courses in England - links or parkland. Woodlands Manor, near Otford, is one of the many beautiful parkland courses in Kent. What sets it apart? What makes it a little bit more special than the other fine courses and clubs in the area?

Let's start with the location. Woodlands Manor lies in the triangle formed by the M20, M25, and M26. Yet once you leave one of these motorways and you begin the short journey to Woodlands, you enter a different world. Or, to be more specific, you enter an official Area of Natural Beauty. Woodlands lies half way up a stunning valley on the North Downs.

Every time you visit Woodlands, you'll feel like you are miles from the hassles of today's world. Yet getting to Woodlands from Sussex, East London, South London, Kent, and the south coast (even France!) is easy, quick, and convenient. Come to Woodlands or join and you'll spend less time in your car and more time on the golf course.

First time visitors to Woodlands Manor always remember The Eiger, the famous short tenth hole. It looks relatively easy on the scorecard at just 151 yards. However, the tee shot plays dramatically uphill to a green that's just 13 yards deep. It's a hole where even scratch man or woman is delighted to walk away with a par. In a society stableford, for example, card a two and you will likely gain a shot on the field. Par the hole in the match play and, nine times out of ten, you've won the hole. Ready for the challenge?

A brilliant par-3 is the 18th, 200 yards over a road to a small green 110 feet below the tee! The hole offers a fitting finale but also provides perhaps the best views on the course. Club selection here is tricky but a well-struck and well-executed shot provides the opportunity for a par or a even an extremely satisfying two.

Interesting, Varied, and Enjoyable Par 5s and Par 4s Await at Woodlands

The best par-5 at Woodlands might be the 2nd at 489 yards. With firm conditions and a tailing wind, you may be tempted to get the driver out and find the narrow fairway. If the gamble pays off, you may again be tempted to try to retch the green. But it's a risky shot with a pond and bunkers to navigate. It's a hole that could be the start of a great round.

After the challenges of the starting holes at Woodlands, the course offers plenty of scoring opportunities where better and even "average" golfers can hunt for a birdie or two.

Successfully drive the par-4 4th, just 282 yards, and you could card an eagle or birdie. The 11th, is a shorter par-4 at 322 yards; however, you'll need a solid drive then a cunning pitch to set up a birdie putt. A series of fascinating par-4s follow punctuated by the magnificent 18th hole.

Originally laid out in 1924 and opened by Henry Cotton, Woodlands Manor is a golf course with character and challenge. It's also a tremendously fair golf course.
